OUR EXPERIENCE
On June 10, 2024, we visited Playa Blanca. After a 4-hour flight from the UK and an additional 40-minute transfer from the airport to the destination, our team arrived at Villa Saona at approximately 8.30 p.m. The accommodation was located in a villa complex, which made it difficult to find. To our surprise, the transfer driver needed the number of the property, not the name, in order to help identify our destination. Upon arrival, our initial perceptions of the villa may not accurately reflect the entirety of its amenities, as it is limited to a set of steps and a substantial driveway from its front profile. The first obstacle entailed opening the front door. It appeared that the alarm did not have a key fob to turn it off, but we eventually found one on a work surface inside the house. The previous visitor must have broken it off the key chain. As we arrived late, we had to expedite our arrival as it appeared that milk and bread, which are typically provided for late-arriving passengers, were not available. The nearest shop is situated approximately 5 minutes' walk to the right; however, due to its closing time at 9 p.m., there was a significant rush. As a group of five adults and three children aged 11, 8, and 3, we were aware that it was imperative to provide well-stocked water due to the poor filter system within the area where tap water is not recommended. After obtaining the goods, we were able to explore the villa further. It can be clarified that the venue was clean and orderly, as well as exceedingly spacious for a gathering of our size. After further inspection, we were quick to notice that the bedrooms were all of a suitable size, and the two rooms equipped with en suites were greatly appreciated. The kitchen area was showcasing marble worktops, giving it a luxurious, modern feel. The dining area boasted a huge seating area for evening meals, overlooking the pool area. The lower level comprised two non-en suite bedrooms, a generously sized living area with a reasonable-sized television, a pool table, and a shower room, where the children and one adult aged 16 were accommodated. The pool area was opulent; however, the pool's cleanliness was subpar. It was immediately apparent that the bottom had not been cleaned for a while. Although the pool is advertised as heated, the temperature was still too cold, even for 26 degrees outside of Spanish weather. If you are in search of a tranquil hot tub, be prepared for disappointment as the tub ceases to function at 10 p.m. and the warmth does not persist into the early evening. With the exception of a few issues mentioned, the villa does provide all the necessary amenities for a home away from home.
Location
The villa's location was not ideal. With only 3 shops within a 10-15 minute walk, as stated before, this somewhat is rather tedious in the scorching heat. A walk of 20–25 minutes will take you to the heart of Playa Blanca, where all the nightlife (bars and restaurants) is located. We would recommend taking advantage of the taxi company located in Playa Blanca. These guys are very responsive and will take you into town for under 5 euros. If you are in search of a dining establishment that has a traditional British atmosphere, Popeyes is an obvious choice. For an English breakfast that costs less than 10 euros and the ever-popular happy hour between 4 and 7, where one can enjoy a pint of Estrella for only 2 euros, this establishment has gained considerable popularity among its tourist trade. Playa Blanca itself is stunning; you will fall in love with the lush views and top-quality hospitality from all shop owners. With tours to explore the history of the island, you will be spoilt for choice to keep your day flowing. Behind the villa, in close proximity, is a noisy hotel that puts on a few shows for children throughout the day. This can become annoying when you're relaxing on the sunbeds outside.
FUN FACT
Lanzarote has black sand beaches. These are formed by the wear and erosion of the nearby cliffs.
OUR SCORE
7/10
SILVER RATING
PRICE 7
CLEANLINESS 7
LOCATION 6
AMENITIES 8
Price: Like all villas it depends on what time of year you stay. June-October can be very pricey
Cleanliness: Inside the villa was perfect however the pool and hot tub needed more TLC
Location: Would need to use the public transport and taxi firms especially if your travelling with children
Amenities: Again the hot tub timings let this down from being perfect. The pool was not really heated as advertised . Needs to upgrade the pool cues and stock chalk
ALL IN ALL
Lanzarote itself is absolutely magical, but Villa Saona fell short of expectations. The interior of the accommodation was pretty exceptional, but the two main reasons behind the dissapointment were the swimming pool and hot tub. Both of which are reasons why the villas price is bumped up rather than staying at a hotel. Lanzarote is certainly one you should add to your bucket list.
